Workshop Urban Traffic Management

On July 2nd, 2014 TrafficQuest organised a workshop in which representatives from municipalities, joint ventures and knowledge institutes participated and discussed together about urban trends and the role of traffic management now and in the future. Topic of discussion were the characteristics of urban traffic and urban mobility. What is so special about urban traffic, why is it so complex and what are the differences with motorway traffic? From this starting point several issues were raised that are typical for the current situation as well as the expected developments. These issues were clustered into social-urban problems, urban trends, technological trends and problems that appear when solutions are implemented.

Visit traffic control room Rotterdam

The topic ‘urban traffic management’ has been getting more attention lately because of the increasing (re-)urbanisation. TrafficQuest is exploring the subject and in that context the TrafficQuest team paid a visit to the municipal traffic control room (‘verkeersregiekamer’) of the city of Rotterdam. Their team presented the state of practice and the latest developments in Rotterdam. There is an extensive monitoring and traffic management program in place. Much of that is concentrated in the traffic control room. TrafficQuest presented three topics related to urban traffic management that the team has worked on this year. The discussion also touched upon how TrafficQuest can help Rotterdam with their traffic management activities. It was a morning well spent, in which we learned much from each other. A knowledge exchange worth repeating!
